First, I have to say Thank God for Bill & Bev. If not for them, we had the potential of another major catastrophe.Recall that they were here for the rally and were supposed to leave when everyone else did. Unfortunately, there was a death in the family and they had to fly back home, leaving their rig here so we could keep an eye on it while they were gone. They returned near midnight last night.
After we finished the last of our packing up, we all met for breakfast around 9:00 (we went to a local diner which claimed to be 50s style, but was more a country / Texas style -- they explained they never changed the sign). We returned after breakfast and we proceeded to hitch up the truck to the trailer. We got hitched successfully but something just seemed a bit off kilter to me, like the hitch wasn't really sliding in very smoothly, even though it was perfectly locked into place. Thankfully, Bill was standing outside and heard me telling Mitch that I thought something didn't seem quite right. Bill took a look and right away noticed that it wasn't sitting level. Upon further investigation, on the triglide part of the hitch, the welds were broken and cracked in 2 places, which could cause the hitch to become unhitched, though not in the same way as it did before when it wasn't locked well.
Bill wasn't 100% sure whether it was safe to tow or not, so we called the manufacturer (sending photos) and they told us absolutely NOT to tow with it.
The rest of the day was spent (for Mitch -- for me, all 3 clients had work for me today so I was busy with that) on the phone between the local RV repair shop (where we bought the water pump from, who is also a dealer for the hitch manufacturer), the warranty company and the manufacturer - to try to find the part. It doesn't help that this part was discontinued and probably not in stock anywhere. We also need to have an RV tech come to our site since it's not safe to tow (although I have no idea how long it has been this way and we could probably make it a few miles -- but why chance it?) No one was available to come today and probably not tomorrow morning either. He finally had to give up when they closed at 4:30 -- not having had any success in finding the part. They open again at 8:00, so hopefully he'll have better luck then.
So, anyway, have to cancel our plans to meet my new client (and friend) in Clearwater, and possibly the trip to Ocala. That's a definite PIBE (play it by ear) situation -- it all depends on how long we have to stay here. I can't complain, though. At least it's a nice remote campground, just about a mile from civilization and has full hookups. Lots of worse places to get stuck in.
My new expression about plans is that plans are made in bubbles.
