Reservations have been made at the next campground.... we are planning to spend Labor Day weekend in the Black Hills of South Dakota, visiting Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse and Custer State Park (to see all the wildlife); maybe Wind Cave Park and /or some local towns in the area such as Hot Springs, Hill City or Rapid City; depends on timing as we'll only have 2 extra days (we'll be taking a guided tour to the first 3 on the same day -- it's an all day tour).My only real concern is that of the 350 mile drive, about 300 of it is on a desolate stretch of one-lane county roads with nowhere to pull over (no shoulders, no stores, no exits with towns; the roads go thru farmland or just nothing) AND no cell service. I feel like we are tempting the fates here.
But then again, it's now or never. Mt. Rushmore was on our bucket list, and I think this is the closest we'll to it for a long time (if ever again), so if not now, when?
At least there are no mountains to drive over, which is a worse fear.

We are not sure of the route you intend to take but we have traveled from Bismarck to the Black Hills many times. We go Bismarck to Belfield ND. which is about 125 miles on the interstate. Gas up there if you need to because they have truck stops. Take Hwy. 85 south to Bowman ND. Gas up there if you need to, they have truck stops. Then on to the Spearfish SD or the Black Hills. The road is very good and they are state highways. You can even stop in New Salem ND to see the giant cow but do not drive up there with your rig. There is no place to turn around.
